Agricultural Crisis in North Korea: Kim Jong-un Calls for a "Fundamental Transformation"

On Tuesday, North Korea leader Kim Jong-un implored government officials to achieve a “fundamental transformation” in agricultural production, reported state media amid signs that the country’s food shortage is intensifying. He declared that reaching grain production targets for this year was paramount and heavily emphasized how stable agriculture output would play an essential role during his second day of addressing members of the Worker’s Party at their key conference.

North Korea’s agricultural industry relies mainly on collective farms, which usually comprise many small farmers who work together. Recently, the South Korean Unification Ministry declared that the food shortage in the North seem to have become worse.

The ministry declared that it would be unusual for North Korea to publicly disclose its agricultural tactics, which was planned for late February. At Monday’s meeting, Kim stated the significance of increasing the agricultural productive force as a key factor in socialist building success., according to KCNA’s report.

There Is Not Much Information About the Situation In North Korean

As North Korea works relentlessly to contain the coronavirus pandemic, its already-strained economy continues to deteriorate due to international sanctions and travel restrictions. As a result of these hindrances, food shortage in the country has worsened drastically–with some reports showing that it is even direr than during past famines in the 1990s. It’s difficult to determine just how severe this crisis truly is without further investigation into the situation; however, one thing remains certain: something must be done quickly before hunger runs rampant throughout North Korea.

The report from 38 North contends that food availability in North Korea has plummeted to a level far below the necessary amount for human survival. The country’s goal of self-sufficiency requires all its grain production to be domestic, but this move has made them susceptible to disastrous consequences.
